In 2019, Hof University turned 25 and to celebrate this, we organized an exhibition that took place in the hallways of the main campus. Our team created an augmented reality exhibit that brings Campus Münchberg – which is located about 20 Kilometers away – to the campus in Hof. The visitors can use iPads to explore a digital 3D model of the campus that is mapped to a physical building plan.
A cube-shaped white table with a stylized map of Campus Münchberg printed on its top. It is decorated with some low-poly-styled, white plastic trees and patches of green artificial grass.Image of a cloud-shaped device containing a display. Latter one shows animated instructions on how to use the exhibit. An image showing the complete exhibit. It consists of a white, cube-shaped table standing on the floor and two cloud-shaped devices with displays hanging from a wire rope stretched over the heads of the visitors.

Digital tools like Miro and Trello helped us to stay organized and connected within our team of five students.

A GIF loop of a stack of business cards showing images of different personas one after another.
We used different personas to empathize with our target group.
A wooden prototype of the cloud-shaped iPad case containing an iPad.
Prototyping was a recurring task throughout the course of the project.
We chose a simple graphic style with photographed billboards that show how the students at Campus Münchberg work.

A stylized map of the Campus Münchberg consisting of straight lines marking the walls.
I also used a simple style for the design of the building plan to resemble the clean way of working the design students in Münchberg are taught to use.
The design of the furniture is derived from the specifications another group developed for the exhibition.

Two male students holding the cloud-shaped device and looking at the display with interest.
The iPads are masked as clouds hanging over the campus – an allusion to the typical Münchberg weather.
An animation on the idle screen explains how to interact with the exhibit.

Atmosphere sounds recorded at the original sites make the virtual campus tour more vivid.
Image of people having placed their beverages on the exhibit while using it.
During the celebration, we observed that people put down their drinks on the furniture because they needed both hands to interact with the exhibit. A cup holder would have made sense in this case.
We added an information button later because we noticed that most users skipped the instructions on the idle screen and did not know how to use the exhibit properly as a consequence.
